What is a Labour Market Impact Assessment?
A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker. If no Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident could be found in the work force in Canada, an employer, located in Canada, could hire a temporary foreign worker. An employer MUST go through Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to obtain approval to hire foreign workers. Obtaining a positive LMIA is a complex process, which cannot be guaranteed. Depends on the skills, experience and job titles, the applicant maybe eligible to apply for permanent residency through various programs provided by Canada.

Once an employer gets the LMIA, the worker can apply for a work permit.
To apply for a work permit, a worker needs
- a job offer letter
- a contract
- a copy of LMIA, and
- the LMIA number
